How to Use iOS 26 Interaction Accessibility Settings on iPhone and iPad

If standard touch interactions on your iPhone or iPad have been a pain point, whether due to motor difficulties, motion sensitivity, or visual impairment, iOS 26 has more tools to address this than ever. The Accessibility menu has grown significantly since its early days, and some of the newer additions (Head Tracking, Reduce Bright Effects, Braille Access) are genuinely impressive.

This guide covers the most useful interaction accessibility settings available in iOS 26.4, how to find them, and what they actually do. It’s not exhaustive. Apple’s Accessibility menu runs deep, but it hits the features most people are looking for.

How to Get to Accessibility Settings

In iOS 26, Accessibility has its own top-level entry in Settings, you no longer have to go through General to find it. If you’ve been digging through General out of habit, stop.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, it’s about a third of the way down the main Settings list.

AssistiveTouch

AssistiveTouch adds a floating on-screen button that gives you tap-based access to gestures and actions that would otherwise require physical dexterity, including pinching, swiping, multi-finger taps, and more. It’s been around for years, but iOS 26 has expanded the gesture customization options considerably.

It’s particularly useful if you have difficulty with multi-touch gestures or pressing physical buttons.

Enable AssistiveTouch

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
  2. Toggle AssistiveTouch on.

A small floating button with concentric circles appears on screen. Tap it to open the AssistiveTouch menu, which gives you quick access to Home, Notifications, Control Center, and a Custom section.

Create a Custom Gesture

The Custom section is where AssistiveTouch gets genuinely useful. You can record any sequence of touches or swipes and replay it with a single tap.

  1. From the AssistiveTouch settings page, tap Create New Gesture at the bottom of the screen.

  1. On the recording screen, perform the gesture you want to save. A single swipe, a pinch, a multi-tap, whatever you need. Tap Stop when you’re done.

  1. Tap Save in the top right and give your gesture a name.

Your saved gesture now appears in the Custom section of the AssistiveTouch menu, marked with a star icon. Tap it to execute the gesture anywhere on screen.

Head Tracking

This one’s new enough that a lot of people don’t know it exists. Head Tracking lets you control the on-screen pointer using head movements, with facial gestures (like smiling or raising your eyebrows) assigned to actions. It’s genuinely hands-free control, and it’s more capable than the older Switch Control setup it largely replaces for motor accessibility.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Head Tracking.
  2. Toggle Head Tracking on.
  3. Adjust pointer speed and assign facial gestures to specific actions (tap, scroll, open menu, etc.).

Position your device about 18 inches from your face in good lighting for the best accuracy. Poor lighting causes noticeable lag, which is the most common complaint from users getting started with this feature.

Typing Feedback

If you’ve been struggling with the touchscreen keyboard, whether because you can’t easily track what you’ve typed or because you miss the tactile feedback of physical keys, Typing Feedback addresses this directly.

It lives under Spoken Content now (previously under Speech in older iOS versions).

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content.
  2. Tap Typing Feedback.

The options worth knowing:

  • Character, reads each letter aloud as you type it
  • Character Hints, reads the phonetic name of each letter (useful if Character alone isn’t clear enough)
  • Words, reads the full word after you finish typing it
  • Auto-text, speaks autocorrections and autocapitalizations as they happen

Turn on what you need and ignore the rest. There’s no downside to mixing and matching.

Reduce Motion

iOS 26 introduced a “Liquid Glass” design language with glossy highlights and more pronounced animations throughout the OS. It looks polished, but if you’re sensitive to motion or visual effects, it can be a lot. Reduce Motion handles this, and in iOS 26, it’s more relevant than ever.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion.
  2. Toggle Reduce Motion on.

With Reduce Motion on, the parallax effect on the Home Screen disappears, app open/close animations switch to simple fades, and the new Liquid Glass transitions are toned down significantly. You can also enable Prefer Cross-Fade Transitions for an even simpler visual experience.

The Auto-Play Message Effects toggle is also here, turn it off if you don’t want iMessage animations (confetti, fireworks, etc.) playing automatically.

Reduce Bright Effects (New in iOS 26.4)

This is a new addition that solves a specific problem with the Liquid Glass design: interactive elements like keyboard keys flash with bright highlights when tapped. For low-vision users or anyone with light sensitivity, that’s genuinely uncomfortable.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  2. Toggle Reduce Bright Effects on.

This minimizes the flashing highlights on taps across the system, including keyboard keys, buttons, and interactive elements. If Liquid Glass has been bothering you visually, this is the fix. If it’s still not enough, combine it with Reduce Motion for maximum calm.

A Few More Worth Knowing

The features above cover most common interaction needs, but iOS 26 has expanded significantly beyond them. A few others worth exploring:

  • Braille Access (Settings > Accessibility > Braille Access), a full braille-first navigation mode for paired braille displays. VoiceOver is optional. This is a major upgrade over what was available even two years ago.
  • VoiceOver (Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver), screen reader that reads everything aloud and responds to gesture commands. The foundation of screen-free iPhone use.
  • Flash Alerts (Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > LED Flash for Alerts), flashes the camera LED or screen for incoming notifications. Useful if you miss audio alerts.
  • Accessibility Reader, in-app text reflow with font and color customization, integrates with Spoken Content. Look for it in supported apps under the share sheet.

Apple’s Accessibility Nutrition Labels in the App Store are also worth checking before downloading new apps. They tell you upfront which accessibility features each app supports, so you’re not guessing.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Head Tracking is laggy or inaccurate

Check your lighting first. Head Tracking relies on Face ID hardware and degrades fast in low light. Make sure you’re within 18 inches of the screen. If it’s still inconsistent, go back to Settings > Accessibility > Head Tracking and reduce the pointer speed.

Liquid Glass effects are still distracting with Reduce Motion on

Enable both Reduce Motion and Reduce Bright Effects together. Also check Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency, turning that on removes the frosted-glass blurring on panels and menus.

AssistiveTouch button is in the way

Drag it to any edge of the screen. It snaps to the border and becomes semi-transparent when you’re not using it. You can also reduce its opacity in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch > Idle Opacity.

iOS 26.4 beta crashing on older devices

If you’re on a beta build and seeing instability, go to Settings > General > Software Update and check whether a stable release is available. The Reduce Bright Effects feature is in the stable iOS 26.4 release, so there’s no reason to stay on a beta for it.

iOS 26 has turned what used to be a fairly basic accessibility toolkit into something genuinely comprehensive. Whether you’ve been dealing with motion sensitivity, motor difficulties, or visual impairment, there’s a real chance the feature you needed is already built in. You just had to know where to look. That problem is now solved.
