If your iPhone dies before dinner, the battery percentage won’t tell you why. The Battery Health screen shows capacity, speed limits, and service warnings.
Everything you need is built into iOS. The menu name depends on your iPhone model, but the figures are easy to read.
What Is iPhone Battery Health?
Battery Health compares your iPhone’s current battery capacity with its original capacity. It also checks whether the battery can supply enough power during heavy use. As the battery ages, iOS may show a service warning.
On an iPhone 15 or later with iOS 17.4 or later, you’ll also see the cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Older iPhones still show Maximum Capacity and battery health messages. Those details are enough to help you judge whether it’s time for a replacement.

Battery Health is an iPhone feature. You can’t install or set it up on an iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Android phone.

The dates are useful when you check a used iPhone or the age of its battery. But they don’t replace the capacity reading or your experience during a normal day.

On an iPhone 14 or earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
Apple uses a longer menu name because this page combines health details and charging controls. If you expected the shorter name from a newer guide, don’t worry. Your phone still has the health tools you need.
Expected result: You see Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and any battery or service message that applies.
Step 5: Read Maximum Capacity
Find Maximum Capacity and note the percentage. It estimates how much charge the battery can hold compared with when it was new.
For example, 88% means the battery can hold about 88% of its original charge under iOS test conditions. It doesn’t mean your iPhone is charged to 88% right now. That mix-up is common because both figures use the same symbol.
Use the number as a guide:
- Above 80% with acceptable daily battery life: Keep using the battery.
- Above 80% with severe or unexpected drain: Review app use. Ask Apple to check the iPhone if needed.
- Below 80%: Consider service, especially if the phone no longer lasts through your normal day.

Capacity and peak performance measure different battery traits. Your iPhone can have lower capacity and still support normal performance. Power problems may also need attention before capacity falls below 80%.

Step 7: Review Cycle Count on Supported iPhones
On an iPhone 15 or later with iOS 17.4 or later, stay in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Find Cycle Count.
One charge cycle means you’ve used an amount equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity. It doesn’t need to happen during one charging session. Using 50% today and another 50% tomorrow adds one cycle.
Cycle count adds useful context about age and use, but it isn’t a replacement deadline. I’d skip any advice that treats one cycle number as a fixed cutoff. Read it with Maximum Capacity, service warnings, performance, and daily battery life.
On an iPhone 14 or earlier, cycle count may not appear in Settings. That’s expected. You can still judge the battery without it.
Expected result: Supported newer iPhones show cycle count and battery dates. Older models still provide enough details for a useful battery check.
Step 8: Check for a Degraded or Unverified Battery Message
Read each message below the health details. Apple puts key warnings here. They’re more useful than the percentage alone.
If iOS says the battery’s health is significantly degraded, you can keep using the iPhone. A replacement may improve battery life and speed. Back up the phone, check its coverage, and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
If iOS says it can’t verify a genuine Apple battery, the health details may be missing or wrong. This can happen after some repairs or when iOS can’t confirm the installed part.
Don’t base a repair choice on unverified health data. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can inspect the phone. An independent shop may cost less, but some repairs leave Battery Health data limited or unavailable. Ask what iOS will show after the work.
Expected result: You know whether the figures are reliable and whether iOS recommends service.
Step 9: Decide Whether to Replace the Battery
Apple’s 80% figure is a useful service threshold. Daily use still matters, so you don’t need to replace a useful battery as soon as it nears that number.
Consider replacement when one or more of these conditions apply:
- Maximum Capacity is below 80%.
- iOS reports that the battery is significantly degraded.
- The iPhone shuts down without warning or reports battery-related performance management.
- Battery life is too short for your normal day, even after you check software and app use.
- Apple diagnostics find a battery problem.
You can usually keep using the battery when capacity is above 80%, Peak Performance Capability is normal, and the phone meets your needs. A battery at 84% that lasts all day may be less urgent than one at 91% with unexplained shutdowns.
With AppleCare+, Apple provides battery service at no added charge when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. Exactly 80% doesn’t meet the “less than 80%” rule. Apple also checks the device and applies its current coverage terms.
Expected result: You can decide whether to keep using the battery or seek service.
Step 10: Check Coverage and Current Replacement Pricing
Check your AppleCare coverage in Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty. Select the iPhone if asked. You can also use Apple’s online coverage tools.
Then visit Apple’s iPhone Battery Service page. Choose your exact iPhone model in the estimate tool to see the current price without warranty.
Old forum prices aren’t useful here. Battery service costs vary by model and can change. Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. Check the final estimate before you book.

Step 11: Arrange Service and Prepare the iPhone
Book an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider through Apple Support. The provider can inspect the iPhone and confirm whether battery service makes sense.

Turn On Optimized Battery Charging
Open Settings > Battery, then choose Charging or Battery Health & Charging, based on your model. Turn on Optimized Battery Charging.
The iPhone learns your charging routine and may pause above 80% until you’re likely to need it. This reduces the time the battery stays full. There is a trade-off when your schedule changes: you may pick up the phone before it reaches 100%.
Some newer models also have a charge-limit option. A lower limit reduces the time spent at full charge, but you’ll start each day with less power. I’d use it when you finish the day with plenty left. Skip it if you’re already searching for a charger by late afternoon.
Avoid Excessive Heat
Heat can cause lasting battery damage. Keep the iPhone out of hot cars and direct sunlight. Stop charging if the phone gets very hot, then let it cool.
A thick case can trap heat during charging. If your iPhone gets hot with a MagSafe charger or USB-C power adapter, remove the case before you continue. Some warmth is normal during heavy tasks. Heat that stays uncomfortable needs attention.

Battery Health Is Missing

Fix: Check the model and iOS version in Settings > General > About. Install any update through Settings > General > Software Update. If you see a battery verification warning, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
The Menu Has a Different Name
Why it happens: iPhone 15 and later use Battery Health. iPhone 14 and earlier use Battery Health & Charging.
Fix: Open Settings > Battery and tap the label shown on your iPhone. Both pages contain the correct health details for their supported models.
This name difference has sent plenty of people through Settings twice. If one label is missing, use the other one shown under Battery.
Cycle Count Does Not Appear
Why it happens: Apple shows the expanded cycle-count view on iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later.
Fix: Confirm the model and version in Settings > General > About. On an older iPhone, use Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, service messages, and daily battery life instead.
Battery Life Is Poor Above 80%
Why it happens: Maximum Capacity doesn’t measure app use, weak cell reception, screen brightness, background work, or software faults. A healthy battery can still drain fast when the phone works hard.
Fix: Open Settings > Battery and review Battery Usage by App. Tap Show Activity, if available, to see how long each app ran on screen or in the background. Update iOS and your apps, restart the iPhone, and test it again.
If you’ve watched the battery drop while the phone sits untouched, check for an app with high background use. Poor cell reception can also drain the battery because the modem keeps searching for a stronger signal.
Low Power Mode at Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode can get you through a difficult day. It reduces some background work and visual effects, so mail and other tasks may update less often. If heavy drain continues, ask Apple to run diagnostics. Don’t wait for capacity to fall below 80%.
Maximum Capacity Is Below 80%
Why it happens: The battery has lost much of its original capacity through age and use.
Fix: Check Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty. If AppleCare+ applies and capacity is below 80%, contact Apple about battery service at no added charge. Otherwise, get Apple’s current repair estimate for your exact model.
A reading below 80% doesn’t make the phone unusable. It means replacement is worth pricing, especially if you charge more than once during a normal day.
iOS Says the Battery Is Significantly Degraded
Why it happens: iOS has found enough battery wear to recommend service.
Fix: Back up the iPhone and book an inspection with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can keep using the phone for a while if it’s safe and stable. A replacement may improve battery life and speed.
If the phone is swollen, the screen is lifting, or the device gets dangerously hot, stop using and charging it. Contact Apple or a repair provider for safe handling steps.
Battery Information Looks Wrong After a Repair
Why it happens: iOS may be unable to verify the installed battery as genuine. Battery Health details can then be missing or unreliable.
Fix: Keep the repair receipt and contact the original repair provider. For a verified check, take the iPhone to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
