Use a Mail Focus Filter to select the email accounts shown during an iPhone Focus and the accounts whose Mail notifications you receive. Follow Apple’s documented Mail setup below, then check its result alongside the Focus’s separate People and Apps controls.

Start here: Open Settings > Focus, choose a Focus, scroll to Focus Filters, and tap Add Filter. Select an available app filter, choose the information to use, then tap Add. This guide follows the current iOS 27 Apple Focus setup guide. It walks through the documented Mail choices and explains how to manage People and Apps notification rules separately.

A filter is a convenience for concentrating on the information you selected. Check the actual result in the app; choosing a notification rule alone does not establish which content is visible. Do not use this walkthrough as a substitute for controlling access to an unlocked phone.

The screen illustrations below show example controls. Use the options and labels offered by your installed apps; no performed device test is claimed.

Before You Begin

  • Check your installed release in Settings > General > About. The linked current iPhone guide is for iOS 27.
  • Choose the Focus you want to use, such as Work or Personal.
  • Make the Mail accounts you intend to select available in Mail first.
  • Decide which people and apps should be allowed to notify you. Keep needed alerts in mind before silencing them.

If account data itself is missing, solve that separately before diagnosing a filter. Our iCloud sync troubleshooting guide may help with the normal data setup.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open Focus settings

Open Settings > Focus on your iPhone. Choose the Focus you want to configure, rather than trying to add an app filter from the top-level list.

Settings > Focus screen showing the list of Focuses including Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, and Work, with Work highlighted

Check: You are editing the intended Focus. Make a note of its name so that you turn on the same one during the test.

Step 2: Find the filter controls

In that Focus, scroll to Focus Filters and tap Add Filter. Keep the People and Apps notification controls separate from the app filters you are about to choose.

Check: You can see the available app or system filters. If the menu does not match your phone, stop and compare the appropriate version of Apple’s guide instead of guessing.

Step 3: Choose an available app filter

Tap an app filter and review its choices. Apple’s setup guide specifically gives Mail accounts and calendars as examples. Available choices depend on the app and device; the presence of a People list does not by itself establish a Messages conversation-list filter.

Add Filter screen listing app filters for Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari, with system filters shown below

Check: Select the information the app actually offers. You do not need to add an unrelated account or calendar merely to make a second choice appear.

Step 4: Select Mail accounts

  • Under Focus Filters > Add Filter, tap Mail.
  • Select the accounts you want to see in your inbox during that Focus.
  • Complete the displayed selection and tap Add.

Apple’s Mail guide describes selecting both the inbox accounts shown and the accounts whose Mail notifications you receive during that Focus. Check that account-level result separately from the Focus’s People and Apps notification controls. Mail’s own Filtered by criteria, such as unread messages, are another separate control.

Check: Turn on the configured Focus, open Mail, and compare the visible account selection with the accounts you chose. If the result is wrong, return to the Mail filter and inspect its selection before changing unrelated settings. The filter does not add an account that is absent from Mail’s normal account setup.

Step 5: Review other available filters separately

Apple’s setup flow also lets you select other app or system filters offered on the device. Use each app’s current documentation and the actual selection controls before expecting a particular effect. Adding a filter for one app does not establish what another app will display.

Check: Start with the documented Mail selection. Other app filters need their own current instructions and test; this guide does not supply a Calendar-specific selection procedure.

Step 6: Set People notification rules separately

For calls and message notifications, open the Focus’s People control. Choose Allow Notifications From and add contacts, or choose Silence Notifications From and select people to silence. Apple documents these notification choices in its People and Apps guidance.

These are notification rules. Do not infer from them that existing Messages conversations are hidden. Review the other options shown for calls and urgent notifications before relying on the Focus during work or sleep.

Check: Verify the intended notification rule with a suitable contact, and restore any alert you need. A notification test is different from inspecting Mail content.

Step 7: Turn on the same Focus and compare results

Open Control Center, tap Focus, then select the Focus you configured. Apple’s turn-on and scheduling guide documents this flow and the separate time, location, and app schedules.

Check: Open Mail and compare the inbox accounts and Mail account notifications with your filter selection. Separately check the People and Apps notification choices you made in Step 6. Turn the Focus off and compare again. Record a mismatch rather than assuming every listed app hides content in the same way.

Configuration: Keep the Setup Small

  • Work: Select the relevant Mail account, then configure people and app notifications for your workday.
  • Personal: Select the Mail accounts you want during personal time. Review needed work or family alerts before silencing them.
  • Study: Choose the appropriate inbox, then test a small set of notification rules.
  • Sleep: Configure the notification choices you need overnight. A MagSafe charger is an optional desk or bedside accessory, not a requirement for filters.

For a third-party app, check its current documentation and its actual Add Filter options. An absent choice is not enough evidence to diagnose the cause or recommend a workaround.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Add Filter does not show the app I expected

Make sure you opened a specific Focus, then scrolled to its Focus Filters section. Compare the installed app and OS with their current documentation. Do not add extra accounts, create dummy calendars, or change unrelated permissions solely to make a filter appear.

Mail still shows information I did not expect

Inspect the account selection in the Mail Focus filter. Check Mail’s separate message-filter controls as well, using the linked Mail guide. First confirm the normal account works with the Focus off; a data-sync problem and a filter-selection problem need different checks.

Messages notifications do not match my choice

Review People and Apps in the Focus, including the other call and notification options shown on your phone. The current Apple notification guide describes additional ways an alert can be allowed. This walkthrough does not treat a People list as proof of conversation hiding.

My filters are not on another Apple device

Apple says Focus filters do not sync even when Share Across Devices is on. Set up and test the app filters separately on each device. Sharing the Focus state is different from synchronizing every app’s filter configuration.

FAQ

Can I configure more than one app? Add the offered app filters to the same Focus, then test each one independently. Begin with the documented Mail choice rather than assuming all apps have the same controls.

Do I need a subscription or a new app? Use the Focus controls already described in Apple’s iPhone guide. This tutorial does not establish pricing or subscription terms for any separate app or service you use with them.

What should I record before asking for help? Record the iOS version, Focus name, selected Mail accounts, which app shows the mismatch, and whether the behavior changes when the Focus is off. Do not include passwords or private message contents in support requests.

Wrapping Up

Choose a Focus, add its Mail filter, and test the selected inbox accounts and Mail notifications. Configure the Focus’s People and Apps controls separately. This gives you a concrete result to check without promising that a Focus conceals every tab or conversation.
