MacBooks are genuinely good on battery, and there’s a surprising amount of headroom that goes untouched. Several of the most impactful settings landed in recent macOS releases without much fanfare. They’re there, they work, and they’re easy to miss.
This guide covers macOS Sonoma and Sequoia on both Intel and Apple silicon Macs — note that Intel Macs top out at Sonoma, since Sequoia and later are Apple silicon only. Where a tip only applies to one, it’s noted.
1. Enable Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode is the fastest way to extend a charge when you need it. It dials back CPU and GPU performance and reduces display power, translating to noticeably longer runtime on the same battery percentage.
Open System Settings > Battery. Find Low Power Mode and use the dropdown to pick your preferred behavior:
- Only on Battery: the right default for almost everyone. You get full performance when plugged in and automatic savings when you’re not.
- Always: good for travel days when maximum runtime matters more than speed.
- Never: fine if battery life isn’t a current concern.

The trade-off is real: video exports and compiles take longer in this mode. For email, documents, and general browsing, you probably won’t notice.
2. Turn on Optimized Battery Charging
This one’s worth enabling even if you ignore everything else here. Optimized Battery Charging learns your daily routine and pauses charging around 80%, then finishes right before you typically unplug. It reduces how long the battery sits fully saturated at 100%, and that’s where lithium-ion wear accelerates fastest.
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Click Battery Health.
- Turn on Optimized Battery Charging.
- If you see Manage battery longevity, turn that on too, as it adds extra measures to limit degradation over time.

You might occasionally see the charge stalled at 80% and wonder if something’s wrong. That’s the feature working as intended.
3. Cap Your Charge at 80%
If your MacBook sits on a desk plugged in most of the day, consider hard-limiting the charge to 80%. Keeping a lithium battery below full is genuinely better for its long-term capacity than cycling to 100% repeatedly.
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Look for a Charge Limit option, available on many Apple silicon MacBooks running Sonoma or Sequoia.
- Set the limit to 80%.

When you need a full charge for travel, check the battery icon in the menu bar for an option to charge to full temporarily. The exact label varies by macOS version.
4. Check Your Battery Health
Before optimizing anything, it helps to know what you’re working with. A battery at 65% of its original capacity isn’t going to last 12 hours regardless of what settings you change.
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Click Battery Health.
- Check the Condition field. Normal means you’re fine. Service Recommended means capacity has dropped enough that a replacement is worth considering.

For cycle count, go to Apple menu > About This Mac, click System Report, and look under Power. Apple considers Mac notebook batteries healthy up to 1,000 cycles. Below 80% capacity is where you’ll notice shorter runtime, a reasonable prompt to look into battery replacement.
5. Dim Your Display
The screen is one of the largest power draws on any laptop. Dropping brightness even 20–30% makes a real difference across a full day.
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Drag the Brightness slider left, or enable Automatically adjust brightness to let macOS calibrate based on ambient light.

If you have a MacBook Pro with ProMotion, go to System Settings > Displays > Advanced and set the refresh rate to 60 Hz on battery. High refresh rates look smooth but cost real energy.
There’s also a dedicated battery option: go to System Settings > Battery > Options and turn on Slightly dim the display on battery. It’s subtle enough that you probably won’t notice the difference, but it adds up over a long session.
6. Manage Login Items and Background Apps
Every app that launches at startup and keeps running in the background is quietly consuming CPU cycles and network bandwidth. macOS gives you granular control over both.
- Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Under Open at Login, select any app you don’t need at startup and click the – button to remove it.
- Under Allow in Background, toggle off apps that don’t need to sync or update continuously.

Menu bar apps that refresh frequently, like weather widgets, social feeds, and stock tickers, are common offenders. Audit them honestly.
7. Quit Apps You’re Not Using
macOS handles memory reasonably well, but running apps still consume CPU time and network activity. A dot under an app icon in the Dock means it’s active.
Right-click an app in the Dock and select Quit, or press Cmd + Q with the app in focus. On Mac, closing a window doesn’t quit the app; it keeps running until you quit it explicitly.
8. Use Activity Monitor to Find Power-Hungry Processes
If your battery is draining faster than expected and you can’t pin down why, Activity Monitor’s Energy tab tells you exactly which processes are responsible.
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or press
Cmd + Spaceand type “Activity Monitor.” - Click the Energy tab.
- Sort by Energy Impact; the highest values at the top are your culprits.
- Select an unnecessary process and click the X button to quit it.

Check this right after a major macOS upgrade too. Background indexing and system maintenance run for a day or two post-install and temporarily spike drain, so it’s worth verifying before making any other changes.
9. Turn Off Keyboard Backlight
Useful at night; wasted power in daylight. At minimum, set it to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity.
- Open System Settings > Keyboard.
- Enable the option to turn the keyboard backlight off after inactivity, and set your preferred timeout.

You can also reduce or cut the backlight directly using the backlight brightness keys on your keyboard, usually F5 or the equivalent function key with a backlight icon.
10. Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth When Not in Use
Both radios consume power continuously while active, even when they’re idle. Using Ethernet? Turn Wi-Fi off. No Bluetooth devices connected? Turn that off too.
Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and select Turn Wi-Fi Off.
Click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar and select Turn Bluetooth Off.
The savings are modest on Apple silicon Macs, since those chips handle idle radios efficiently, but it adds up on a long day away from an outlet.
11. Unplug Unused Peripherals
USB drives, external SSDs, hubs, and connected accessories draw power from your Mac while they’re plugged in. If you’re not actively using something, unplug it.
Mechanical hard drives and bus-powered hubs are the worst offenders. Passive adapters and solid-state drives pull much less, but if you’re squeezing every minute out of a charge, they count.
12. Use Safari for Browsing
Chrome is a meaningful battery drain on Mac. Safari integrates directly with macOS’s power management and consistently uses less energy for the same browsing work; independent tests generally confirm the gap. If you spend a lot of time in a browser, switching is one of the higher-impact changes on this list.

13. Pause Time Machine When on Battery
Time Machine backups hit the disk and CPU hard. Running one on battery can noticeably spike drain.
- Open System Settings > General > Time Machine.
- Turn off Back Up Automatically and run backups manually when you’re plugged in.
You lose the safety net of automatic backups while unplugged. It’s a conscious trade-off, but the right one if you’re disciplined about plugging in at a desk.
14. Turn Off Location Services
Location Services run across multiple apps in the background. Many of those apps have no real need to know where you are.
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Either disable Location Services entirely at the top (which also disables Find My Mac), or scroll through the app list and turn off individual apps that don’t need your location.

The per-app approach is the smarter call for most setups; you keep Find My Mac while cutting off apps that have no legitimate reason to check your location.
15. Keep macOS Updated
Point releases regularly include power-efficiency improvements and fixes for battery drain bugs. A problem that’s been frustrating you might already be resolved in an update you haven’t installed.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available updates.

One caveat: right after a major macOS upgrade, drain spikes for a day or two while Spotlight re-indexes and background maintenance finishes. Leave the Mac plugged in, let it settle, then reassess before making other changes.
