Sony Ericsson W580i with a Mac and iSync

January 30th, 2008 by Mike

Sony Ericsson W580iMany of you are probably aware of my recent decision to get an iPod Touch instead of waiting for an iPhone to come to Canada. Previously, I was using an O2 Xda mini Pocket PC based phone but unfortunately Leopard and my Pocket Mac software where not cooperating and I really wanted a phone that just worked without too much monkeying around…

I retired my O2 the day I got my iPod Touch and recycled an older Sony Ericsson T616 into use again that had played well with my Mac over Bluetooth using iSync. The T616 was OK but had always been a bit flaky signal wise and it seems like the Bluetooth headset pairing was not up to par with some of the newer phones. Stuff just gets better, what can I say! iPhone vs iPod Touch - a Canadian View

January 26th, 2008 by Mike

iPhone vs iPod Touch SideEnough is enough! I just can’t wait forever for an iPhone to finally come to Canada… So I guess the iPod Touch is the next best thing and since an iPhone only comes in a maximum size of 8GB it only makes sense to one up it by getting the 16GB iPod Touch. Take that iPhone!!

Where I live in Canada there are a lot of electronics stores competing with each other and because I also live very close to the border the US pricing seems to be bringing down the cost even more. All things considering with the January Software Upgrade of $19.99 I was able to get an iPod Touch 16GB for $379 without the upgrade bringing the total to $399 with the purchased Software Upgrade for the 5 new Applications. So the same as the US Price and about $20 less then the actual Canadian price.

First impressions… Amazing screen, very bright excellent color. The OS Interface is like nothing else, it almost makes me think Apple sent someone in a time machine to the future to make this product, I can’t help playing with it even if I have no reason at all to be on it, I just have to pick it up and navigate all around! OS X 10.5 Leopard DiskTurning the Dock 2D

There are people out there who don’t like the new 3D Dock in Leopard. Well if you are one of them, here is a quick and easy terminal command to make it 2D. In Applications > Utilities > Terminal, type:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

killall Dock

This will turn the Dock 2D. If you want to put it back to normal just type:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO

My XO Laptop Green Machine Arrived Today

January 22nd, 2008 by Mike

XO Laptop with MacBook ProI got a really pleasant surprise today, I went outside to take some garbage out and low and behold there it was, a rather small box with what I later realized contained my Give-One-Get-One XO Laptop.

I brought it upstairs and opened it, it’s really small! I have heard that the keyboard is unusable for adults but I am actually using it to type up this post and I am surprised at how well it works. It is no MacBook Pro but I can see myself taking this with me when I don’t want to take a bulky laptop. It surfs the web just fine and even works with WordPress so I can post some updates if I need to.

XO Laptop Sugar ReinstallI did have one very catastrophic event with it, I had to do a hard restart (Held the power button down to shut it off) and the result was an XO Laptop with a corrupt system, it just wouldn’t boot up, I tried all sorts of things and ended up erasing and reinstalling the entire Sugar system. So now I actually have a newer OS version (G1G1 XO’s come with version 650 and now I have version 653) . It was actually a very easy install, download a couple of files to a USB flash drive and then reboot while holding down the 4 keys on the right side of the screen, XO just does the rest, erases and loads the new OS.

I will talk some more about it later but I wanted to send out a quick post about my first day XO Laptop ˜experiences.

Leopard Tips and Tricks

January 21st, 2008 by wraith2021

Leopard SpacesSome Tips and Ticks Leopard style, thanks to Wraith2021 from our S2M Forum.

Spaces

Application Binding In Spaces

To set up application binding, launch ‘System Preferences’ and select the “Exposé & Spaces” pane under the “Personal” heading. Switch over to the “Spaces” pane, and press the little plus button below the “Application Assignments” box. In the pop up, choose an application and select “Add.” Under the “Space” column, select which space the application is to be assigned to. Now, whenever you attempt to launch a bound application, OS X will immediately shift to the assigned space and launch it there.

Application Binding to All Spaces

Launch ‘System Preferences’ and select the “Exposé & Spaces” pane under the “Personal” heading. Switch over to the “Spaces” pane, and press the little plus button below the “Application Assignments” box. In the pop up, choose an application and select “Add.” Under the “Space” column, select “Every Space”. Now, whenever you switch spaces the application will follow you to every space you move to.

Moving Windows Between Spaces

If you want to move a window or application between spaces you can do this a number of ways. If you want to stay focused on a single window or application just drag it to the top, bottom, left or right of the screen while keeping hold of it with your mouse, this will switch to the corresponding space without having to let go. Leopard 10.5.2 Needed for Optical Drive sharing, Apple TV 2 and Time Capsule

January 17th, 2008 by Mike

Apple TV 2 MacBook Air Time Capsule

Is it a coincidence that the MacBook Air, Time Capsule and the Apple TV 2 software update all come out in about two weeks time? I have a theory about this. There are definitely some overlapping technologies going on and in order to pull it all off I believe leopard is going to need that 10.5 2 update that we have all been hearing about to pull it all off…

The MacBook Air doesn’t have an Optical drive so it requires you purchase an External USB SuperDrive or you share another computer’s optical drive on your network. Strangely enough this feature would sure come in handy with an Apple TV since it also doesn’t have an internal optical drive, maybe this handy little Apple external USB SuperDrive could also be used with an Apple TV 2? Maybe an Apple TV 2 will allow you both options?

And then there’s Time Capsule! What gives here? What is so different about a drive being internal or externally connected to an AirPort Extreme’s USB port? I know people are talking about network drop outs and how they can affect transfers in mid process potentially corrupting or erasing data, but this is Apple we’re talking about, I’m sure they have this all figured out??

Basically what I’m saying is I think Apple has a few more ticks up their sleeve and it makes a lot of sense that the Leopard OS X 10.5.2 update will also play a big role in all of this. Stay tuned…
