iPhone Unlocked - Delayed!

August 27th, 2007 by Mike

Mac QuestionIt seems AT&T is not too happy about the latest iPhone Unlocking news, at least one of of the companies (iPhoneUnlocking.com)claiming to have the iPhone unlocked has been approached by Lawyers who say they represent AT&T and are considering seeking legal action based on “copyright infringement” and “illegal software dissemination”.

It is uncertain if the other original iPhone Unlocking site (iPhoneSimFree.com) has been approached by AT&T’s legal team or not but for now no mention on their site has been made.

So for the time being… now we have it and now we don’t.

Sharing Files Between a Mac and a PC

August 20th, 2007 by Mike

Mac PC FilesharingMy First Mac just published a really good step by step article on how to share files between a Mac and a PC, or in other words, how to setup a Network between a Mac and a PC. This type of setup is a good choice for anyone who uses both Mac’s and a PC’s in their day to day computing and need to have a permanent connection between them.

Read more to find out how to setup shared network folders on each system, there are several steps that you will need to follow but it is not very difficult with help from this useful article…

I’m going to jinx myself….

August 16th, 2007 by Mike

Crossed Fingers JinxHere is Testimonial from one of our Switching to Mac Forum members, JamesJM. It is very entertaining and thought it should be posted on the main Switching to Mac site.

“I am NOT a superstitious person…. but I gotta admit I’m a bit queasy about posting this. :)

When I was a PC guy it never failed that when I upgraded, or added anything new, I would inevitably be forced into the ‘troubleshooting guide’ because I would encounter at least one, and sometimes several, of the “If such and such is not working” lists of things that could go wrong.

Those happen for Apple people as well… I read about them all the time.  ie: “iPhoto 08′ Preferences Will Not Open”.

It has not, as yet, (take note of that jinx thing), happened to me, however, not once…. could life GET any better, I ask you? :)

Parallels Desktop for Mac 3.0 Activation Key Invalid

August 15th, 2007 by Mike

Parallels Desktop for Mac 3Me and Parallels have a kind of love-hate relationship. I love the actual product Parallels Desktop for Mac and believe it has been an active contributor in helping many people Switch to a Mac but on the other hand… Parallels after sales support is much to be desired! Read my last post to see what I mean.

So today I installed or should I say tried to install a brand new copy of Parallels Desktop for Mac 3.0 for a friend. This just purchased (by me) sealed box with what should have been a fresh activation key, everything seemed to be going good right up to the point I was informed the Activation Key was invalid???

O2M - Outlook to Mac by Little Machines

August 15th, 2007 by Mike

O2M Outlook to MacIn several Articles here on Switching to Mac, I’ve mentioned O2M - short for Outlook to Mac, a very nice inexpensive and time saving application by Little Machines designed to get your PC’s Outlook data over to your new Mac. O2M can transfer Outlook Mail, Contacts and Calender data to your Macs Apple productivity suite (Mail, Address Book and iCal) or to the Microsoft’s Mac Outlook equivalent - Entourage.

I’d heard great things about O2M (Outlook to Mac) and had read up on it so I was well aware of what it was capable of accomplishing but I had not had the opportunity to actually go through the steps of taking real world Outlook PC Data and getting it over to a Mac. Today I got the the chance when my Aunt asked me if there was a way to get her PC’s Microsoft Office 2003 Data transferred to her new MacBook Pro.

Mac vs PC - iWork vs Office XML Style

August 13th, 2007 by Mike

Gates vs SteveMac vs PC, or maybe more like Apple vs Microsoft… Just as Microsoft announces a delay in its Office for Mac 2008, Apple launches iWork 08 which embraces the new Microsoft XML formatting. So what does this mean?? If you have the current MS Office for Mac you will not be able to read or write the new Microsoft Office 2007 XML native file format without using downloaded beta converters. On the other-hand “iWork ‘08 applications can open the OpenXML formats churned out by their Office 2007 counterparts”

“Michael Gartenberg of JupiterResearch said: “What this really shows is Microsoft’s inability to ship software on time these days,” Apple, meanwhile, is doing the smart thing. “They’re making sure that they’re not dependent on Microsoft for any of the important software [for the Mac],” That strategy, along with the US$79 price of iWork and the window of opportunity because of Office 2008’s delay, puts Cupertino in the cat bird seat. “It’s going to be hard for Microsoft to get those people who try and buy iWork back, Microsoft’s let down its Mac customers.”"

Mac mini Gets a Quiet Update

August 7th, 2007 by Mike

Mac Mini Core 2 DuoApple just had too much to talk about today during their Cupertino based press announcement. Today’s press announcement included a major iMac redesign, a new iLife and iWork 08 as well as some .Mac enhancements that included 10x more iDisk space and bandwidth. More on that…

So the little guy “the Mac mini” took a back seat today but did get a much needed speed-bump to the Intel Core 2 Duo sporting 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz speeds respectively. They also received double the ram with 1GB upgradeable to 2GB and an increase in Hard Disk space with 80GB and 120 GB Hard Drives standard.

Other then that the new Mac mini’s are pretty much the same Mac mini from a year ago but still make a great Apple TV alternative if you want a more powerful and full featured Multimedia Mac for your entertainment unit. (No hacking required!)
