Formatting a drive can be a simple yet hidden task in Mac OSX. Formatting a drive can be helpful if you would like to repurpose an old drive. Using this tutorial, you can reformat any type of drive including external hard drives, SD cards or even flash drives. This tutorial does not require any additional software.
Reformatting a Drive
1. Open Disk Utility by launching it from your dock or by searching for it in Spotlight.

2. Look towards the lefthand side of the window, you will see a sidebar. Find the drive that you would like to format. Once you have found the drive, select it. Now, look towards the center of the window, you will see a row of tabs. From this row, click on the Erase tab.

3. Look towards the center of the window, you will see drop down menu labeled Format. From this menu you can choose which format you would like your drive in. Below this is a text box labeled Name. From here you can name your drive. Configure these settings to your liking.

4. Now, look towards the bottom righthand corner of the window, you will see a button labeled Erase. Click on this button. The drive you have selected will now be formated.
Warning: This will erase all data from this drive.
