By default, Mac OS X chooses to display all the hard drives in your current machine on the desktop. This may begin to clutter the desktop when you have several hard drives, such as in a Mac Pro.

Hard Drive

To hide any hard drives, external drives or even network drives from the Desktop, you can use the Finder preferences. Any hard drive or other kind of device will still be accessible through any Finder window, they will just be hidden from the desktop.

Click on the Finder icon in the Dock.

Finder

Highlight Finder in the Menu Bar and select Preferences.

Preferences

On the next window, click the General tab.

General

From the General tab, you can select Hard Disks, External Disks, CDs and DVDs and Connected Servers. Unchecking the box next to its name will remove it from the desktop; again: all your information is still available in any Finder window by selecting the hard drive from the left hand column.
