In this tutorial, we will be showing you how to disable the infrared receiver on your Mac. We find this feature useful if you have two or more Macs in one room and would like to use the Apple Remote with one of the two Macs. This will prevent the two machines from interfering with each other.

1. Open System Preferences by launching it from your dock or by searching for it in Spotlight.

2. Now, look for the heading that is labeled “Personal”. This heading is located towards the top of the window. Under this heading you will see an option labeled “Security”. Click on this.

3. Look towards the top of the window, you will see a row of tabs. Click on the General tab.

4. Look towards the bottom lefthand side of the window. You will see a button that looks like a lock. Click on this button. If you have a password on your Mac, you will be asked to type it in. You can now make changes to your security settings.

5. Now, look towards the center of the screen. You will see many security options. Look for the option that is labeled “Disable remote control infrared receiver”. Next to this option you will see a check box. Check this box. Your infrared receiver is now disabled.
