iChat is a great way to use your favorite IM service from your desktop. If your IM services uses “buddy” icons or something similar, you can easily change your icon via iChat. This is a great way to personalize your IM account. This tutorial does not require any additional software.
Changing Your “Buddy” Icon
1. Before starting this tutorial, make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet. Now, open iChat by launching it from your dock or by searching for it in Spotlight.

2. Look towards the top of the iChat window, you will see your “buddy” icon. Click on it. When you do this, a drop down menu will appear.

3. From the drop down window, you will have two different way of changing your icon. You can either use the preselected icons in the drop down menu or you can click on the “Edit Picture..” option. When you do this the Buddy Picture menu will appear.

Using The Buddy Picture Menu

Once you are in the “Edit Picture..” or Buddy Icon menu, look towards the bottom of the screen. You will see two buttons, one looks like a camera and the other looks like a window.

If your Mac has a webcam, you can click on the camera button and take a new picture. This is a great way to take quick and easy “buddy” pictures from your webcam.

The window button will let you add effects to the currently selected icon. These are the same effects that you will find in Photo Booth.

If you click on the “Choose…” button you will be prompted to choose a new icon from your drive. This is great if you would like to use a pre-made icon or other photo.
