Just over a month ago we wrote a tutorial on changing an application’s icon in OS X. This tutorial told you how to change any application’s icon, except Finder. Finder, unfortunately, cannot be changed like most applications. In this tutorial we will be showing you how to change the Finder icon. Before we start this tutorial, please find an icon that you would like to use for Finder.

Changing The Finder Icon

1. Open a web browser of your choice and navigate to this webpage. When it has completely opened, look towards the righthand side of the page. You will see two different download links. Choose the one that works with your OS. Note: The Leopard build does work with Snow Leopard.

2. Once you have downloaded LiteIcon, install and open it. When the application has completely opened, look at the top of the window. You will see a few tabs–click on the tab that is labeled “Dock”.

3. Once you are in the Dock tab, look towards the middle of the window. You will see a few different icons including Finder. Now find the icon that you would like to use to replace the current Finder icon and drag it on top of the existing one (in the LiteIcon window). Now, click on “Apple Changes” and “Relaunch Finder”.

Note: If you would ever like to revert your Finder icon simply open LiteIcon and look at the Apple toolbar. Click on “File”, then click on “Restore All Icons”.
