Users of the OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Mail app often experience a recurring problem with repeat e-mail messages being saved in the Recovered Messages Folder.  One large e-mail can easily max out the memory designated for mail storage.  If you sent a particularly large file, the load time for your Mail app will go through the floor or even cause the program to time out. Worst of all, new users quickly find that there’s no obvious change in settings that will solve the problem.

Finding A Solution

Fixing this particular error is easy if you know how to view and find hidden files on your Mac.  To make invisible folders visible, enter the following commands into the terminal, one after the other:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

Once you’ve made all files visible, search Finder for a folder entitled “.mboxCache.plist“.  To search for this folder in Finder, make all the invisible folders visible, and then type the file name into the Finder search bar.

Another way to find the file is to go into Finder and search in Home Folder > Library > Mail > IMAP. The hidden cache file should be listed in the IMAP folder.

Erase Your Problems!

Once you’ve entered the search query, you might see several folders entitled .mboxCache.plist listed by date.  If that’s the case choose the folder that holds the repeated e-mail message. If only one folder appears, choose that folder for deletion. Now, simply delete the offending folder by dropping it in the trash and emptying the trashcan.  Finally, restart your computer to allow the file to regenerate.
