With the iOS 4.2 software update for iPad, the hardware switch located on the right spine of the device was permanently set as a mute switch, where previously it was used to lock the rotation of the iPad screen.
While somewhat useful, the mute switch didn’t affect all audio sources on the device and some apps would still play audio with the switch in the “mute” position. Many complained about the new use for this switch, and the latest software update, iOS 4.3 now gives you a choice on how to use that switch.
To set the preference for the hardware switch, tap on Settings from the iPad home screen.

Once in Settings, tap on the General bar on the left-hand column of the screen.

Among other preferences on this screen, scroll down until you see Use Side Switch to:

You now have a choice between Lock (Screen) Rotation or Mute Switch. Whichever preference you set for the side switch, the alternate will be available in the widgets section of the iPad multitasking bar. For example, if you set the hardware switch to be a Mute button, double tap the physical Home Button, swipe to the left, and you will see the Orientation Lock soft-button here.

If you choose to make the hardware switch lock the screen rotation, the Mute button will appear in the multitasking bar.
