Along with the new iPad 2, Apple has introduced a brand new first-party cover that works seamlessly with the hardware. Apple’s “Smart Cover” attaches to the left spine of the device magnetically and lines up perfectly every time with little effort. Magnets are built in to the actual iPad 2 to ensure perfect alignment.
Additional magnets in the cover allow the iPad to be woken up once the cover is removed, and is put to sleep when the cover is placed on the screen. The Smart Cover can also be folded in various configuration to support a “typing angle” for the iPad, or a vertical movie-mode style stand. The cover is very light and thin, adding little bulk to the actual device. There are also preferences available in the Settings app for the Smart Cover.
To access these preferences, open the Settings app from the iPad home screen.

Tap on the General tab of the Settings menu in the left-hand column.

Under the General Settings, scroll down to the iPad Cover preferences. Here you can choose whether or not the smart cover will wake/lock the iPad when it is removed/attached respectively. Slide the On/Off switch to set the preference.
