del.icio.us is a social bookmarking web service that allows you to store and share bookmarks online using your browser. By having your bookmarks online, you can always access them when you’re away from home or using another computer. Del.icio.us is a free service that also allows users to search for things that others people have bookmarked. It’s like community bookmarking. I find it quite useful to integrate del.icio.us with my web browser – Safari.
The installation of DeliciousSafari is quite straightforward. Head over to the project’s website and download the application. After the download completes it should mount automatically. In case it does not, double click on the downloaded file to mount it. Then double click on the installer to begin the installation process. Answer some simple questions and hit Continue a few times to get through the installation.
After the installation completes it will request you to restart Safari. So quit Safari and launch it again. You should see a new icon similar to the one in the screenshot below.
This means your installation is now complete. Let’s log in to your del.icio.us account and start adding new bookmarks to it. Click on the del.icio.us icon in Safari. It should pop up a login window. In case you do not already have an account with the del.icio.us service click on the Click here link to create an account.
Then log in to your del.icio.us account. Now we can begin creating bookmarks. It’s actually quite simple. Browse to a website you want to bookmark. Then click on the del.icio.us icon to bookmark that page in your del.icio.us account.
As you can see in the screenshot above you can fill out a whole bunch of information. You can add some notes, you can add tags so that your bookmarks are well organized, and you can also decide not to share your bookmark. If you decide not to share the bookmark only you will be able to see it.
Using this icon you can only add new bookmarks to your del.icio.us collection. However, in your Safari menu you should also have a Delicious menu. Using this menu you can do a lot more. You can browse through your current set of bookmarks, you can browse through tags etc. One feature I found quite neat was the feature that allows you to import all your existing Safari bookmarks into your del.icio.us account.
