MailWidget is a great widget for the MacOS Dashboard. It resides in you Dashboard and checks for incoming emails. It notifies you when you receive a new email message, and the great thing is that it works even if Mail.app is not running.

To install it go to the MailWidget website and download the latest release. After you finish downloading the installer should pop up automatically asking you if you want to go ahead and install the widget onto the Dashboard:

Click Install to proceed with the installation. Your Mac’s Dashboard will now appear with your new MailWidget. Find a place to keep it. The installation of MailWidget is now complete. Time to configure our new widget. Move your mouse over the Dashboard widget. click on the i that appears on the bottom right of the widget icon to enter the widgets configuration pane.

Click on the Select Accounts button in the configuration pane. MailWidget will now show you a list of all the mail accounts configured in your Mail.app application. Select the account you want to monitor. Once you select an account you will be asked to enter the password for the email account.

Enter the password and click on Verify. Add as many accounts as you like here. When you are through with that click on Done to return to the mail screen of the MailWidget. Give it a few seconds to check for your email. One really great thing about MailWidget is that it has been integrated with Growl. This way you get notified about an incoming mail even if your Mail.app is not currently running.

MailWidget is small, free, and easy to install and configure. And it helps keep track of emails without having to reach into your Inbox. As a bonus the widget looks great on the Dashboard.
