How to improve Safari with Glims

I’ve been a big fan of Inquisitor over the past few years. It’s a really neat plugin for Safari (and in the more recent months for other web browsers too) which allows you to run smart searches on the web directly using the search box built into your web browser and see the results right there. Glims is another plugin that does a similar task along with a lot of other things. As the Glims website aptly explains, “Glims adds a cocktail of features to Safari” (Tabs, Thumbnails, Full Screen, Search Engines, Search Suggestions, Forms autocomplete on, Dated download folders, Type Ahead)
I recently upgraded to Safari 4 beta on my Mac. I used Inquisitor along with a few other plugins to help me with my web browsing. However, most of the plugins are not compatible with Safari 4 beta. So I thought I’d give Glims a shot. To try it out head to the Glims website and download the plugin’s latest release. Once the download completes it should extract automatically and launch the installer. Hit Continue a few times to complete the installation.
Once you are through with the installation quit and restart your web browser to activate Glims. Your installation should now be done. To check click on Safari -> About Glims in your Safari menu. You will also find a whole lot of configuration options in your Safari Preferences pane. To access it go to Safari -> Preferences…. You should see a new tab to the top right of your Preferences pane, titled Glims. Select it and see if you want to tweak anything.
Glims comes packed with a lot of features. Here are some of my favorites:
- Generates thumbnails for Google/Yahoo search results
- Full screen browsing
- Add favicon to tab labels
- “Undo close tab” option
- Reopen last Safari session on start
- Auto-close download window
- Set focus on the search field on opening a new window
- Adds max window size for window resizing
All in all Glims is a great plugin to improve your productivity while using the Safari web browser and I would recommend it to users of all levels.

Glims is great. It works perfectly for me on Safari 4 except one thing. When you enter a search term in the search bar you should get search suggestions and another section that has site links as you show in your first screenshot. I do not get site links suggestions. I only get search suggestions. I have everything set properly in the options but it still doesn’t work for me. Any ideas why?

Glims does not show link suggestions whenever google changes their code. If it does not work, just change the suggestion engine to google canada. That has always worked for me in the past.
