How to get detailed information on every Mac ever made
April 23, 2009 by Sukrit Dhandhania
Mactracker is a handy program that has a complete database of every Apple Macintosh ever made (Note: the last update was in Dec of 2008, so the 2009 models for MacBooks, MacBook Pro’s and iMacs are not included, yet).
It holds useful information such as memory, CPU, hard drive, device support for printers, cameras, and so on. I found it particularly when I wanted to see if I could add more memory into my Mac. I downloaded and installed Mactracker and within minutes I could get all the information I needed. I checked how much memory my model of the Mac can support, and the specs of the memory chips. I got all this information with ease, without having to hunt for it from the Internet, and all for free.
To get started with Mactracker head over to the project’s website and download the latest release for your operating system (yes, there’s even a Windows version). The download is rather large, so this might be a good chance to make yourself comfortable with a soda or a cup of coffee. Once the download completes drag and drop the application into your computer’s Applications directory.
Once you are done with the installation launch Mactracker by double clicking on its icon in your Mac’s Applications directory. The interface for Mactracker is pretty simple and straightforward. There’s a long list of Mac’s. They even have the Macintosh 128k listed here. As the list is rather long it might be a good idea to use the search box to find your Mac’s model quickly.
Once you find the model you are looking for double click on it to see the details of that model. There’s a lot of information on the parts, such as memory, graphics, CPU…
There’s a treasure trove of information for Mac geeks who want to take a very detailed walk down memory lane. But for Mac technicians or for anyone who wants to take their Mac apart, Mactracker can prove to be a life saver.
