How to create an Audiobook from a Text File

December 17, 2007 by Ross McKillop

AutomatorHow would you like to turn text documents into AudioBooks so you can listen to them on your iPod or while you’re working away on your computer? Here’s a quick tutorial for creating an AudioBook out of a text document using Automator with Tiger or Leopard.

  1. Download this AudioBook Automator file to your Mac
  2. Double click it to launch it in Automator
  3. In Tiger make sure the System Voice is set to Bruce and in Leopard make sure to select Alex. These voices seem to sound the best in each OS
  4. Select File -> Save as Plug-in…
  5. Name it AudioBook and set it to Finder

That’s it for the creating the Automator contextual plug-in.

Now here’s how to use it:

  1. Make sure the text file you want to convert to an Audiobook is open in TextEdit
  2. Right-click (Ctrl+Click) on the text document in Finder
  3. From the drop down Menu select More -> Automator -> AudioBook
  4. This will create an aiff audio file on your desktop that will play in iTunes when opened

I have had best results when using TextEdit on both Tiger and Leopard so you may want to copy and paste your text into TextEdit.

Special thanks to Wraith2021 for making this script!
