Test Your Hard Drive Speeds

One major bottleneck that can slow down your Mac is your drive speed. Different hard drives and solid state drives have different drive speeds and some can be better than others. If your Mac is running slow, you may want to check your drive speeds and decide if a new drive would be to your benefit. In this article, we will be going over the application Disk Speed Test by Black Magic Design. This application is free on the Mac App Store.

Using Disk Speed Test

Once you’ve downloaded Disk Speed Test from the Mac App Store, look towards the middle of the app. In between the two “gauges” you will see a button labeled “Speed Test, Start”. Click on this button to start the speed test.

When you start the test, your Mac will write different types of video files to your drive and record it’s speed. This speed will then be converted to MB/s (megabytes read/written per second). The higher the number, the faster the drive. If you’d like, you can change the file size of the written video file by pressing the the button above the “Start” button.

When you click on this button, you will able to set a different file size, change the target drive, as well as saving a screen shot. If your drive is running below 40MB/s, you might want to consider upgrading to either an SSD or 7200rpm drive for optimal performance.
