iPhone App Review: iPump Abs & Core

February 3, 2009 by Jason Kaneshiro

iPump Abs & Core for the iPhone is described as a “portable personal trainer.” It contains workouts consisting of text instructions, images, video, and progress tracking. This is just one workout app of many from PumpOne. We also have 5 PumpOne iPhone/iPod Touch apps to give away, just leave a comment on this post (first 5 comments will get a free app).

The Good

  • 11 workouts of increasing difficulty. It would take quite a while to work one’s way through the content.
  • Text and images are supplemented with video of professional trainers demonstrating the exercises.
  • Incorporates logging system where you can track the completion of each exercise, add notes, and record the time of day. This in itself could be a big motivator as it allows one to track progress over time. There’s even an email feature so you can send your latest accomplishment to a friend.

The Bad

  • The videos stream over the Wifi or cell connection, meaning there may be difficulty accessing them while exercising outside. Over EDGE, the videos took a prohibitive amount of time to load on my iPhone. It would be nice to have the videos or just audio stored locally.
  • The navigation is a bit confusing. While swiping through the text and image pages of the workout is clear enough, it took me a while to realize you could tap on a page to access the workout videos and additional navigation options.

Conclusion

While the text and images are no improvement over pieces of paper, the real meat of iPump Abs are the videos and the workout tracker, which make good use of the iPhone’s multimedia abilities and its portability.

I can’t say the program wowed me enough to get up and start doing crunches, but exercise nuts already using their iPhone to listen to music while working out might find it appealing. Plus, I’d imagine an actual, live trainer plus gym membership would cost much more than $2.99.

There’s also a free iPump Free Workout App if you’d like to get a taste before ponying up for a full program.

If you’d like a coupon code for one of the five following apps, just leave a comment letting me know which app you’d like. I’ll email you the code which you can then enter on the App Store to receive your free PumpOne app. NOTE: I have one code per app, so once someone leaves a comment requesting an app, that app will no longer be available for you to choose from. Sorry, I only have 1 of each of the 5.

Just what I was looking for. I could use the code for the dumbbells workout, since that’s the only equipment I really have!

Thanks for the review! Maybe I’ll get around to this more easily with app in hand.

Hey, this might just get my lardy butt off the couch and do some crunch ‘n’ rolls.

Great review! I could use a code to any of them if you haven’t given them all away. I’d love to try a specific workout. Just tried the ipump free and that was great!
