A useful feature in OS X is called Spaces. Spaces allows you to use multiple “virtual” desktops to organize and arrange all active windows. You can adjust the number of spaces, the spaces hotkey and more.
To activate Spaces, open System Preferences from the Dock or Applications folder.

Under the Personal settings in System Preferences, click on Expose & Spaces.

At the top of the window there will be two tabs; select Spaces.

There will be a checkbox near the top of the window saying, Enable Spaces. Click inside the checkbox to activate it.

In the blacked-out section of the window, the number and layout of current spaces will appear. Tapping the plus or minus buttons next to Rows and Columns will add a space accordingly. Start out with a smaller number of spaces to get the hang of it; i.e. 4.

Below the spaces layout are several options. You can assign a hotkey to activate the spaces view at anytime. Another hotkey can be assigned to navigate one space at a time, and lastly, a hotkey + number to go directly to a space. The last checkbox in this window will automatically bring you to the space where an application window is currently being used.

Using the hotkey to activate spaces will bring you to the heads up display of every Space.

Switching between spaces or going directly to a space will bring up the spaces icon in the bottom-center of the Desktop to help you navigate.
