Apple Co-Founder and CEO Steve Jobs passed away today at the age of 56 (1955-2011). Just over a month ago (August 24, 2011), Jobs officially announced his resignation from Apple as CEO, with a statement saying “The time has come when I can no longer fulfill my role as Apple CEO.”

Jobs had previously been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a disease that he had been struggling with over the past several years. Jobs had even missed a couple of Apple Keynote presentations due to the illness, but he stood tall and continued as Apple CEO up until just one month prior to his death. Apple, the company that Steve Jobs helped create, build, and save, has released an official statement regarding Jobs’ death.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
Steve Jobs, of course, was an innovator, an entrepreneur, and overall good guy who contributed an incomparable amount to the technology industry. He is one of the reasons why us, the consumers, have the technology that we do. He helped revolutionize the mobile phone market with the iPhone, he made tablet computers popular and mainstream with the iPad, he changed the way we listen to music with the iPod, and he changed the entire tech industry with Mac OS and Macintosh computers. Steve Jobs was a person who advanced us, pushed technology forward and made it available to consumers, so that we could have all of the great technology that we have now.
Apple has created an e-mail address in Steve’s memory.
