Skype now available on the iPhone
October 12, 2008 by Ross McKillop
You can now use the Skype/SkypeOut service to make calls using your iPhone, via the free multi-chat client fring.
Of course there’s a catch - Skype will only work on your iPhone when you’re using a WiFi connection, so you can’t use your 3G connect to escape from long-distance calls. With that said, this might be the final nail in the coffin for those of you that still have land-lines. And no longer having to jailbreak your iPhone to place VoIP calls is a bonus.
The quality is quite decent. Not as good as a Skype call placed from my MacBook Pro with a headset, but there was no echo and only a slightly “tinny” sound. fring is still a free app, and no longer requires a jailbroken device (download from App Store here).
