CrossOver Free Today!

October 28, 2008 by Ross McKillop · 1 Comment

Codeweavers is offering a copy of either CrossOver for Mac (or Linux) for free, today only! The programs normally retail for $40, but will be available free of charge (one license per customer) until midnight CST.

This is particularly good for gamers, as “CrossOver Games Mac” allows you to play Windows games in OS X (certainly not all games, but the list of supported ones is pretty impressive).

Though the site is “down” (not really) they do have a form in place for you to enter your email address, and within “a few days” you’ll get the serial number emailed to you. Act quickly!

About CodeWeavers

CodeWeavers’ mission is to make Linux and Mac OS X fully Windows compatible operating systems. We do this through the power of Wine, which powers all of our CrossOver products. The CrossOver products make it possible to run Windows programs on Mac OS X and Linux without needing a copy or license for Windows itself.

Netflix to bring ‘Watch Instantly’ to Macs

October 26, 2008 by Ross McKillop · 3 Comments

According to Engadget, Netflix will finally allow Macs to stream some 12,000 movies and TV shows via their “Watch Instantly” service in the not too distant future. The irony wasn’t missed by all - this is in large part due to the Microsoft technology “Sliverlight”.

As a Canadian, I won’t be able to report much in terms of quality or experience, but if/once it happens, I’d be very curious to hear from my American friends what the service is like.

Simple 2-Way Google Calendar and iCal Syncing

October 23, 2008 by Ross McKillop · 1 Comment

Google recently updated their hugely popular online application Google Calendar to allow simple two-way syncing with iCal. For instructions, click here and select the Enable Google Calendar in Apple’s iCal link. You may also want to check the info in the Known Issues tab to make sure you’re aware of the current “problems” - none of which I consider big enough to not use this syncing method (as it’s far, far easier than the other “workarounds” - many of which have the same problems).

October 23, 2008 by Ross McKillop · Leave a Comment

Microsoft Word 2008 changed the default format for Word Documents to .docx. The problem is that people running older versions of Microsoft Word (in both Windows and OS X) probably can’t read these files. This brief tutorial will show you how to change the default “Save As” file format to .doc - which is readable in most previous versions of Word. Read more

Apple Fires Back with Bean Counter ad

October 20, 2008 by Ross McKillop · Leave a Comment

The latest Apple Ad, “Bean Counter”, takes aim at Microsoft for spending $10m on the Seinfeld ads. Admittedly, Apple certainly has a large advertising budget - the most common criticism of the ad - but lets face it, they release security patches and “fixes” a lot faster than MS. Of course they don’t have to issue as many, w/ the BSD core, it’s less vulnerable. And they put in more effort in making the product “right” the first time around.

How to boost Spaces using Hyperspaces

October 20, 2008 by Ross McKillop · 1 Comment

Hyperspaces allows you to customize each “space” the way you want - using colours, desktop backgrounds and even text labels/names for each of your spaces. It has finally entered the “public preview” stage (which means you can download it, but it’s pretty much a beta version). Read more

BombSquad is a great (free) Minesweeper clone for OS X. Just as addictive as the Windows version, but totally Mac-ified.
